Changeling is a visual novel currently being developed by Steamberry Studio. Esh is the one responsible for concept, art, graphic design, and a good chunk of the writing. Sprocket is handling editing as well as assisting with some of the game routes.
The game will feature six character routes and 25+ endings. There are currently planned to be 20+ sprites, 20+ backgrounds and numerous additional pieces of artwork integrated into the game. The choices the player makes in the game will alter the way the story progresses, as well as the information learned about each character's individual storyline.
Changeling will have a mix of "heavy" and "light" decisions that impact the story to varying degrees. Heavy decisions either significantly alter the content you see or impact your hidden stats and affect which ending path you are on. Sometimes both! Light decisions have only small impacts on content, but help add flavor to the story by breaking up long periods of just clicking and letting you somewhat determine the personality of your character.
Each character route covers the same time frame, but is comprised of a unique story and set of events that will differ from route to route. There are "romantic" endings, "friendship" endings, and "tragic endings" but none of them are meant to be considered more correct or canon than the others. All are legitimate, based on the choices made in game.
Nora Lewis is a senior at Stone Circle Academy and a self-reliant girl who has rarely found herself at a loss in any situation. But her life is upended after she joins a club at school and discovers a world of paranormal creatures she didn't know existed.
Nora learns that her best friend is a Witch and her other clubmates are a mixture of Vampires, Werewolves, and Wizards. When the others reveal that she's not a normal human either, Nora feels that everything she's ever known to be true about the world has just been proven false.
While working to uncover the mystery behind several incidents in her past which may be connected to her supernatural origins, Nora begins to realize the secret of her identity may be darker than she thought. But if she can solve her own mysteries, she may be able to salvage a crumbling relationship with her increasingly angry and paranoid twin brother. First, though, she has to stay alive in a paranormal society teeming with danger – with the help of one of six guys, each of whom has his own unique problems to deal with.
Each story route has a standalone plot that revolves around the main character researching her origins while navigating unforeseen dangers that start flying her way the moment she finds out she might not be human (because they always wait until that moment). There's a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of humor, and a lot of drama and danger. The story is told in first person, through Nora's incredulous and often dryly sarcastic narrative.
